This Week's Quotation:
We are contemplatives in the heart of the world. Whatever we are, whatever we do, it is not what we do but how much love we put into it. How much love!
~ Mother Teresa
A Glorious Vision
How much love are we putting into everything we do? Mother Teresa put a lot of love into her work with the poor in Calcutta, India, even though that work could hardly be described as glamorous. And perhaps some of the work or other activities we engage in each day are not particularly glamorous either. And yet, if we put the fullness of love into it, there is a sense in which it can shine with significance and even beauty.
Much of my work here as postmaster of the Sunrise Ranch spiritual community involves routine: receiving and distributing letters and packages, mailing letters and packages, forwarding mail to people who no longer live in the community, etc. And I also do all of the janitorial work for our Administration Building: cleaning restrooms, vacuuming, emptying trash, dusting, etc. So much routine! And yet, I love it all.
The poet Kahlil Gibran wrote: “Work is love made visible.” And this doesn’t just apply to stimulating and entertaining work. It applies to even the most ordinary, mundane, and even tedious work. It can all manifest love. And where does this love come from? From you and me! Each one of us is endowed with an infinite reservoir of love that we can draw on to spread into our words and actions.
How do we activate this flow of love through us? To me, a key is blessing. Consciously blessing every object or work circumstance we’re engaged in. I bless every letter I put into a mailbox and every package I mail out. And the wonderful thing is, because of our heart connections with all humanity, this conveys the blessing of love to all who are doing similar work, inviting them to do the same.
About Open Windows
We, the authors of this blog, dedicate it to the transparent exploration of the world's sacred scripture and enlightened spiritual thought. We believe that the original inspiration of all faiths comes from a common source, named and revered in a myriad of ways. With that understanding, the innumerable symbols, beliefs, and practices of faith cease to divide. They become open windows to a common reality that inspires and unifies us. We find deeper insight and nourishment in our own faith and from the expression of faith from others.
We hope these weekly quotations and meditations speak to your heart and soul.
