This Week's Quotation:
He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
~(John 14:12)
The Greater Works
I think it is clear from these words spoken by Jesus to his disciples that he sensed he would not be around forever, so it was up to those who lived after him to continue and even expand the work he had started. Yet what I was often told early in my life was that Jesus had already done everything for me and I didn’t have to do anything to secure my own salvation or that of my world.
Does this ring true for you? It didn’t for me. A life of basically just sitting around believing everything was done for me and I wouldn’t have to do anything but wait around until the moment of death when I would cross over to my guaranteed reward of eternal security in heaven! To me, this just guaranteed an empty and meaningless experience for the rest of my time on earth.
Jesus didn’t restrict his own revelation of the Father to himself. He passionately proclaimed that we can do it too. He was only able to reach a few people in his day, but he was hopeful that those who came after him would do the “greater works,” i.e. expand the spiritual body to include the whole human family.
This is exactly why I am here, and I hope you’ll agree with me that this is why you are here too. Yes, it might be nice if Jesus were here, but he’s not. So it’s up to us. Are we ready to assume full responsibility for revealing the Father, i.e. our Divine Presence, in our living and spreading it through our heart connections to the whole body of humanity?
About Open Windows
We, the authors of this blog, dedicate it to the transparent exploration of the world's sacred scripture and enlightened spiritual thought. We believe that the original inspiration of all faiths comes from a common source, named and revered in a myriad of ways. With that understanding, the innumerable symbols, beliefs, and practices of faith cease to divide. They become open windows to a common reality that inspires and unifies us. We find deeper insight and nourishment in our own faith and from the expression of faith from others.
We hope these weekly quotations and meditations speak to your heart and soul.
